HOUSTON – Results for the Spring 2024 STAAR test continue to pour in and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the results for grades 3-8 on Friday morning.
When it came to reading and language arts, the results varied across grades, where the TEA noted some grades demonstrated improvement while others saw slight declines.

Grades 3, 5, and 8, for example, experienced a decrease each dropping by 2%, while the percentage of students meeting grade level in 4th, and 5th rose by 3 and 4% points, respectively. Social studies’ performance, meanwhile, remained steady as it did in 2023.
The biggest decline was in math and science across all grade levels tested. TEA officials mark this decline as a persistent challenge educators face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has not recovered since then.
“Results from the 2024 STAAR 3-8 assessments reveal the significant gaps in mathematics achievement across our schools. While we continue to see progress in other areas - which is a testament to the dedication and skill of our Texas educators - it’s clear that math performance is not where students need it to be for success after graduation,” TEA Commissioner Mike Morath said in a statement. “Pandemic-induced disruptions to learning exacerbated students’ difficulties in mastering fundamental math concepts. As a result, we must keep our foot on the gas to intensify efforts in providing targeted interventions and research-based education strategies to ensure that students obtain necessary foundational skills and concepts and achieve the desired academic outcomes not only in math but across all subject areas.”
