HOUSTON – Officials with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office say a woman hindered their pursuit of her son after he escaped police custody Thursday. Today, she stood before a judge.
Investigators say Nigel Sanders, 35, was found hiding behind a couch in his mother’s home on Force Street in the Cloverleaf area of east Harris County. His mother, 52-year-old Kathryn Gomez Sanders, was also arrested after Nigel was found in her home.
Now, she could be a convicted felon.
The manhunt for Nigel ensued in Houston Thursday afternoon, after he escaped police custody and attempted to steal a woman’s car.
After the failed carjacking, Nigel continued on foot. His exact movements aren’t clear, but he eventually ended up at his mother’s house, which is located nearly 14 miles away from the courthouse he escaped from.
Today, the state argued that Kathryn presented a threat to community safety by hindering the capture of her son after his violent escape.
Nigel’s sister, Zana Tyler, 27, was also arrested.
Nigel is also facing additional charges for aggravated robbery and escape, in addition to his original charges. His family members, meanwhile, have been charged with hindering apprehension of an escaped inmate.
