LIST: Houston-area schools, beaches closed due to tropical system

The Houston area is expecting waves of rain and coastal flooding due to a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico, which is prompting several closures across the area.

Here is a list of schools and places that have announced closures for Wednesday, June 19.

Texas City Independent School District

“Out of an abundance of caution, Texas City ISD will be canceling school for tomorrow, Wednesday, June 19, 2024. The entire district will close down...summer classes, camps, state testing make ups, athletics and fine arts, robotics camp, offices.”

Dickinson Independent School District

“All Dickinson ISD student activities scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 are cancelled due to the anticipated inclement weather with heavy rains and flooding expected. This includes summer school, End of Course testing, Summer Bridge program, athletic and fine arts activities, senior pictures, and all other student activities.

“Dickinson High School End of Course testing scheduled for Wednesday has been moved to Thursday. DHS will work directly with students who were scheduled to take multiple EOC tests this week.

“A decision about employees scheduled to work on Wednesday will be communicated directly to the employees on Tuesday evening.”

Brazosport Independent School District

Due to the forecasted excessive rain in our area, all Brazosport ISD summer school and school activities are canceled for Wednesday, June 19, 2024. A decision regarding school closures for Thursday will be made and communicated on Wednesday afternoon.”

Hitchcock Independent School District

Due to the potential tropical storm bringing high winds and excessive rainfall, Hitchcock ISD will be closed tomorrow. This closure includes all summer school sessions, summer strength camps, practices, and the administration offices.

We urge all students, staff, and community members to stay safe and dry during this time. Please monitor local weather updates and follow any guidance from emergency management officials.”

Texas City Dike

“Due to forecasted weather, The Texas City Dike will be closing at 7 p.m. until further notice.”

Jamaica Beach

“Our beach is closed until further notice due to high surge that is covering the entire beach at this time. We will reevaluate the beach again tomorrow morning and make a decision to reopen or keep it closed. Your safety is our #1 priority!”

Brazoria County beaches

“County Beaches will be closed today, June 18, at 5 PM due to elevated tides and wave run-up. Beaches will remain closed until conditions improve. Currently our beaches are experiencing high tides, dangerous rip currents, and very gusty wind conditions. Stay weather aware!”
