HOUSTON – A man is now reportedly in custody after opening fire on police following an hours-long standoff at a home in northeast Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers were called around 6:30 a.m. to the 1000 block of Kress Street about a family disturbance.

The caller told authorities that a man was inside the home and was threatening family members with a gun.

Officers arrived at the home and quickly realized it wasn’t easily accessible and was blocked off by a tall fence.

Those officers said that they were able to speak with some teenagers who were in the house but had secured themselves in a bedroom, away from the suspect.

The teens told police that the man was continuing to make threatening comments and they believed he was on some type of substance, because he was behaving erratically.

Through the window, officers were able to talk with the teens and eventually help them escape out the bedroom window.

HPD continued to try to bring the man out of the house for hours to no avail.

He eventually came out of the home with a pistol in his hand before returning back indoors where he remained for about an hour, officers said.

The suspect then came back outside and kept going in and out of the door for some time, which caused an HPD supervisor to put a call in for extra assistance from SWAT and hostage negotiators.

At the same time, the suspect returned outside with the pistol in his hand.

This time, officers say they believe the suspect opened fire toward them, causing them to return gunshots.

HPD says three officers let off multiple rounds during the shooting before the suspect fled back inside his home.

He finally returned outdoors, unarmed, and surrendered to the SWAT team and hostage negotiators.

The man was not injured in the shooting. He is currently in custody and will likely be charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer.

No officers were injured. HPD Assistant Chief Megan Howard said the department will release the body camera footage of the shooting to the public within 30 days.
