Houston PD using multiple assistant chiefs to fill acting police chief’s role during search for new police chief

HOUSTON – It’s been nearly six weeks since former Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner abruptly retired from the department.

Since then Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite was placed in charge of the department on an interim basis.

However, who is covering his role?

On Monday, Chief Satterwhite confirmed he is having various assistant chiefs cover his role on a monthly basis. Satterwhite says in May Assistant Chief Megan Howard filled in for him on a temporary basis, while in June it has been Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir. Satterwhite admits he already has July covered with Adrian Rodriguez, who was promoted to Assistant Chief this past Spring.

Recently, KPRC 2 Investigates asked Mayor John Whitmire for a status update on his search for a permanent HPD chief, “I have confidence in acting chief Satterwhite as we talk,” said Whitmire.

When asked if there is a search Whitmire did not hesitate, “We are reviewing all of our options,” said the Mayor.

KPRC 2 Investigates will continue to monitor developments as they develop.
