HOUSTON – At some point in our lives, we’ve had a foot-in-mouth moment, and our mayor unfortunately had one of those moments recently when commenting about the Harris County judge’s fiancé

On Monday, Judge Lina Hidalgo shared a post on Facebook of herself with her fiancé David James, smiling ear-to-ear during her bridal shower.

At some point, Mayor John Whitmire posted a comment that has since been deleted, which read, “Wonderful. He sure looks like a nerd.”

Yikes indeed. The comment was deleted but it didn’t stop people from taking screenshots beforehand and sharing it all over social media.

The mayor’s spokesperson confirmed Mayor Whitmire had no malicious intent with the since-deleted comments.

“Mayor John Whitmire was having a lighthearted moment and meant no harm. He congratulates the happy couple and wishes them well.”

Hidalgo responded to KPRC 2′s request for comment with this statement:

“Whether or not he meant it in jest or meant for it to be posted publicly, he did the right thing by deleting it. Although truth be told, both David and I are nerds. And I can’t wait to marry him.”

You might remember the awkward exchange last month when Hidalgo and Whitmire shared a podium for the first time during in a severe weather briefing.

Shortly after the press conference ended, the County Judge stepped in to deliver her previous address in Spanish. Mayor Whitmire was prepared to give the podium to another Harris County Pct. 4 Commissioner, Lesley Briones.

“We promised the Spanish media, I would go after you, so let me just repeat my remarks in Spanish,” Hidalgo said.

A small disagreement followed before Judge Hidalgo appeared to remind Whitmire there was already a plan in motion and this “sudden” change was not part of the program. After more words between the two, Hidalgo said, “Mayor, this is a disaster - this is not the time.”
