Beat the heat: Respite care options for Houston seniors

As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to look after the most vulnerable in our community: our seniors.

When your air conditioning isn’t working, or if you’re planning to go out of town and need someone to look after your senior loved one, respite care can be a great solution.

This service might even be covered under your health insurance.

KPRC 2 meteorologist Brittany Begley recently visited Memorial City Health and Rehabilitation to share tips on respite care and how seniors can maintain their health in the scorching summer heat.

“We offer a respite stay for any of our seniors who need a break from the heat. Or if their families are going on vacation, they can come here to make some new friends,” explained administrator Cassandra Noble. “It’s very important, they can also stay hydrated, and get involved in our activities. We love to party here.”

Respite care explained

Texas Health and Human Services describes respite care as having someone else look after your loved one while you take a break. Respite care can take place either in your home (or that of a family or friend) or at a community location.

In your home: You can arrange for someone to come to your home to take care of your loved one, ensuring they are safe and cared for while you are away.

In your community: If in-home services are not an option, you can find a local facility to drop off your loved one for a few hours, or even for overnight or weekend stays. Some options include:

  • Adult daycare centers: These facilities offer supervised activities and meals. Some also provide medical services.
  • Specialized camps: Designed for adults or children with special needs, these camps have trained staff to provide medical care.
  • Assisted living facilities: Some offer overnight stays with supervision and medical care.
  • Nursing homes: These facilities can provide extended respite care with medical staff on hand.

How to choose a respite provider

Once you find a potential respite provider, the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center suggests the following steps:

  • Conduct a telephone screening
  • Follow up with an in-person interview
  • Ask for references
  • Check references and conduct a criminal background check
  • Evaluate costs and financing options
