Parents of Kay-Alana Turner demand answers, apology after controversial bodycam footage released

Following the tragic discovery of their daughter, a family is opening up about their ordeal.

Kay-Alana Turner disappeared in Tomball last year, and for over 400 days, her parents did whatever they could to find her.

For 407 days, Robby and Rosa Calhoun, who live in Beaumont, often traveled to Tomball where their daughter disappeared. Now, as they see body camera footage of an encounter with Harris County Sheriff deputies, they want an apology.

KPRC 2′s Rilwan Balogun met with the family in Beaumont, where they showed him body camera footage of the day Harris County deputies encountered their daughter.

“When I saw those four way blinkers, my thought was she needs help and she didn’t get help. She got what she got,” Robby Calhoun recalls.

For 407 days, the Calhouns used social media, their community, and the Tomball community to search for her. The search ended when Texas EquuSearch found her remains.

“We were never going to give up finding her. We were always going to find her or we were going to die looking for her,” says Rosa Calhoun.

Kay-Alana was last seen driving away from deputies on March 10, 2023, in the 18000 block of Country Hills Drive. Despite extensive searches, only her phone and shoes were found. Her family believes she was suffering from a mental health crisis during her disappearance.

“They called her filthy names and they said she’s probably dead out here and they walked away,” Rosa shares.

The Sheriff’s spokesperson said several searches were made over multiple days in Harris and Montgomery County without success.

“But Kay-Alana is deeply loved,” Rosa reiterates. “She is deeply loved. She is the most loving, the kindest girl, she is deeply loved. We were never going to give up finding her. We were always going to find her or we were going to die looking for her.”

While the family has closure, they say this isn’t over as they wait for an autopsy to be performed to bury their daughter.

What happened?

After 407 long days, the remains of Kay-Alana Turner were found less than 1,000 feet from where her car was abandoned. Every single day during that time, her family posted on their Facebook page, sharing memories of Kay-Alana and highlighting her kind and loving nature. A constant message in their posts was, “We love Kay! God loves her more!”

Kay-Alana disappeared after leaving a friend’s home in Silsbee, Texas, heading toward Austin. She had been acting unusually and not sleeping well in the days leading up to her departure.

Witnesses in Hockley and Tomball reported seeing her in the early morning hours of March 10, asking to sleep in driveways. Her phone died by the time she was found sleeping in her car by a homeowner in Tomball’s Holly Creek Estates around 6 a.m. The homeowner called neighbors and the homeowner’s association, who tried to wake her.

Frightened, Kay-Alana attempted to drive away, but the group blocked her, and a Harris County officer broke her car window. She fled through yards and farmland, eventually abandoning her car in the woods. She then took off on foot, leaving behind her phone and shoes filled with glass.

On April 19, volunteers from Texas EquuSearch found human remains on a private property near where Kay-Alana was last seen. Her family thanked Texas EquuSearch and everyone who supported their search efforts in a social media post.

“Thank you for your prayers and support,” Kay-Alana’s family posted. “We love Kay! God loves her more. She has been met with the Kindness of the Lord. After 407 days, Kay-Alana has been found. We must wait for the medical examiner to determine positive identification, but it is our belief that our baby was found by Texas EquuSearch yesterday, not far from where she went missing on March 10th, 2023. From what we know, she has been in the presence of God since that date.”

Texas EquuSearch also released a statement thanking the community and experts who assisted in the search, expressing condolences to Kay-Alana’s parents.

In a touching tribute, they wrote, “To Kay-Alana, your parents adore you. They are hurting. As you rest in the place prepared for you by our Lord, ask Him to send your momma and daddy a moment of peace and solace as they continue to fight the fight.”
