What to do at broken light intersections or when flashing red in Houston? How to handle roundabouts

HOUSTONAsk 2:

“Heading into hurricane season could you go over what to do at an intersection where the lights are out or all flashing red? Also, could you go over what to do at a roundabout? We have a new nearby and it’s a mess.

Answer:

If you get to an intersection and the lights are out, you will need to treat it as a four way stop. When it comes to flashing red lights, the idea is to treat this scenario as a stop sign.

As for the rules of roundabouts, Law Enforcement liaison, Katie Alexander with the Texas Municipal Police Association explains what you should if you come across one.

“In order to enter a roundabout, there are three things you have to remember. You’ve got to slow down. You’ve got to look around and you’ve got to be ready to yield. You got to yield to the cars in those lanes. This sounds like one of those roundabouts that may have two lanes and when it comes to two lanes you have got to sit back and realize what lane you are going to go into. But you are still going to be yielding to those cars,” Alexander explained.
