The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that the male driver, traveling westbound at a high rate of speed, struck a cable vehicle before leaving the roadway. The car then collided with a mailbox, a power pole, and a gas main in a second crash.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The gas main was damaged, causing a leak that has prompted safety precautions. CenterPoint Energy is working to secure the leak, and residents are advised to remain indoors until it is fixed.
Some residents evacuated due to the strong smell of gas, with assistance from the HCSO.
CenterPoint said it’s safe now for neighbors to return to their normal activities.
“Our trained and qualified employees worked to address the leak as safely and quickly as possible, turning off the natural gas at this location until the customer can work with a licensed plumber to make repairs,” Logan Anderson with CenterPoint told KPRC 2.
“Once repairs have been completed, CenterPoint crews will safely return natural gas service to the customer. In the meantime, neighbors can safely return to their normal activities.”
