Teen fatally shot by friend playing with gun in SW Houston apartment

A teen was fatally shot at an apartment complex in southwest Houston early this morning, according to the Houston Police Department.

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 2:30 a.m. at the 9100 block of Fondren. Upon arrival, HPD found a teen male with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Despite the efforts of the Houston Fire Department, the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary information suggests that three juvenile males were in the apartment while their parents were away. According to HPD, one of the teens was playing with a firearm when it accidentally discharged, striking the victim. The shooter, believed to be around 13 or 14 years old, fled the scene with the weapon.

UPDATE: Per HPD, one person related to this case has been arrested and taken to the Joint Processing Center, with no other information available at this time.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact HPD.
