Are we surprised? Study shows age groups most likely to commit violent crimes, those who become victims

HOUSTON – A recent study revealed the age demographics of those who commit violent crimes, as well as victims of those crimes.

DeMayo Law Office used data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find the demographics of those most likely to commit a violent crime and those most likely to be victims between the years 2018 and 2022.

Those aged 25 were more likely to commit violent crimes than any other age group, with a total of 698,368 across the US. 17 and 16-year-olds were second and third most likely.

Those at 21 years old were most likely to be a victim of violent crime.

By the numbers:

  • The study showed those who are 25 years old have a total of 372,791 simple assault cases, aggravated assault makes up 179,593, 128,370 cases of robbery, rape accounts for 10,875, while the remainder is split between murder and non-negligent manslaughter (6,418), and justifiable homicide (321).
  • The study also revealed that 17-year-olds were the second age group most likely to commit violent crimes, contributing a total of 680,285 crimes between 2018 and 2022. Their most common crime was simple assault, making up nearly half of their total violent crimes (385,226).
  • Those aged 16 account for 679,787 violent crimes between 2018 and 2022.

In addition to the law firm examining what ages have committed violent crimes and those who are victims of it, the study also analyzed where the most repeated locations for violent crime were, and the relationships between victim and offender.
