Officials said it happened around 2 p.m., when they received multiple calls about a man pointing a weapon at random people and engaging with drivers at a gas station at the intersection.

Deputies arrived within five minutes and found a man who matched the description of the suspect.

Authorities said deputies ordered the suspect to show them his hands when the suspect reached into his waistband and pulled out a pistol, pointing it at the deputies.

One deputy fired a single shot, striking the suspect in his hip area. The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement Command Tommy Diaz said they are looking into whether or not the gun the suspect had was a real gun.

“As soon as the suspect was struck, he started claiming that the gun was not a real pistol. We haven’t touched the weapon yet, we’re taking photographs, once we finish processing the scene we will take that weapon into custody and put it into evidence and at that point we’ll know what the make, model, and caliber of that pistol is, but from what we see it looks like a real gun,” Diaz said.

Diaz says because they received so many calls regarding the incident, they are asking for anyone who may have witnessed it to give them a call.

“I do want to ask the public for some help because we had so many calls for service, we do want to make sure that people are aware that we’re going to need some of those witness statements of people who were driving by or witnessed the suspect displaying the gun,” Diaz said.

Diaz said people can call either dispatch at 713-221-6000 or HCSO Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100.
