JAMAICA BEACH, Texas – With Hurricane Beryl slamming through southeast Texas, one Houston-area resident is counting her lucky stars she and her dog were able to get out safely during the brunt of the storm.
Deborah Tony, 64, tells KPRC 2 reporter Bill Spencer it was around 6 a.m. when the Jamaica Beach resident heard an unbelievable crashing sound and realized her roof was torn off.
Drywall started falling on her and her dog, but after calling 911, Tony was able to get out of that situation and is thankful that she and her dog are safe.
On Tony’s street on Blackbeard Rd., near Galveston, power lines were knocked down due to the storm’s intense winds, which she initially thought was a tornado. Her roof was carried across the street and landed in a neighbor’s home.
According to City officials, Tony’s home was one of two that lost their roofs on that street, as well as a hardware store in the business center.
