FREEPORT, Texas – Hurricane Beryl made landfall along the Texas Coast at 4 a.m., bringing strong winds and heavy rain to Matagorda County, Freeport, and surrounding areas as it inches toward the Houston area.
KPRC 2 Reporter Re’Chelle Turner was riding out the eye of the storm at a Buc-ee’s gas station in Freeport when the station’s sign flew off due to the strong winds.
Debris from the building is also falling as Beryl continues to move through the area.
KPRC 2 Meteorologist Caroline Brown emphasized that the storm’s landfall does not signify the end, but rather just the beginning.
We still have to do with storm surges, heavy downpours, and of course tropical tornadoes. You’re urged to take the warnings seriously as you would take any severe weather warning.
As Beryl gains strength, its core has tightened and hurricane-force winds are now focused at the coast. Matagorda, Sargent, and Bryan Beach could see winds over 75 mph. As for Houston, Sugarland, The Woodlands, Liberty, and Katy winds range from 58 to 73 mph. There is still a chance for widespread power outages, downed trees, and potential damage to roofs.
Beryl is expected to move out of SE Texas by 7 p.m. Monday.
