Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the back of the home.

The fire was brought under control 17 minutes after the call was received and was confined to the attic and one first-floor room.

“The cause was determined to be a flash fire resulting from a resident refueling an enclosed generator while it was still running. The resident refueling the generator sustained serious injuries and was Life Flighted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported,” the department said.

The department shared these tips to stay safe when handling generators:

- NEVER try to refuel a generator while it is still running

- NEVER use generators indoors or in partially enclosed spaces: This includes homes, garages, and crawl spaces, even if they have some ventilation.

- ALWAYS keep generators away from open doors and windows. Using fans do NOT prevent CO build-up.
