3 Houston area residents file lawsuit against CenterPoint after Beryl outages spoil all the food in their refrigerators

HOUSTON – In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, new details are surfacing involving a lawsuit where several private citizens are suing CenterPoint Energy for loss, pain and suffering during and after the storm.

Its a familiar story we’ve been hearing since Beryl, no power leading to pounds and pounds of spoiled food needing to be thrown away. Now, three people are asking for their money back in a more than 30-page lawsuit against CenterPoint.

Specifically, the lawsuit says CenterPoint failed to prepare the grid against a predictable weather event and has refused to take accountability for their system’s failure. The lawsuit also says CenterPoint failed to properly maintain its lines and equipment and adequately invest in infrastructure.

The plaintiffs suing CenterPoint say they were without power for 80 hours or more, causing them to suffer in various ways including losing everything in their refrigerators and freezers. They’re wanting to hold CenterPoint accountable by demanding reimbursement for the spoiled food.

The lawsuit goes on to say that last year, CenterPoint Energy earned more than $6.5 billion in profits while the median income for a Houstonian is about $50,000 a year.

Furthermore, it states the company owes its billion dollar success to it’s customers and the least it can do is restock Houston’s fridges.
