Why were Houston residents with generators during Hurricane Beryl still experiencing power outages?

HOUSTON – KPRC 2′s newsroom has been inundated with calls and emails from Houston area viewers reporting the generators meant to power their entire homes did not work during Hurricane Beryl.

One couple told KPRC 2 assignment editor she purchased a Generac generator in 2022. During the start of Hurricane Beryl, the couple said the generator worked but went out on July 8 around 11 a.m. By then millions of CenterPoint Energy customers were reporting power outages. When they went to turn the generator back on, however, it wouldn’t restart.

The couple adds they purchased a 7-year warranty on their Generac generator but are having a difficult time getting the company, “Generators by Wired” to make repairs.

According to the company’s Facebook page, “Generators by Wired” said Wednesday morning in part its team is “working tirelessly” to get to as many repairs as it can.

“We understand the importance of having a reliable power source and are dedicated to resolving any issues you may be experiencing,” the post reads. “Our dedicated team members have left their homes and families, who are also without power, to assist you during this challenging time. We are working tirelessly to repair your generator as quickly as possible.

KPRC 2 reporter John Paul Barajas has reached out to Generac for a direct response and left them a voicemail Thursday. A spokesperson shared the following statement via email Friday:

“Our first recommendation is to contact an authorized dealer in your area. If you have already been working with a dealer, and you are not getting a resolution, we are happy to look into the situation. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 888-436-3722.”
