HOUSTON – Houston is prone to mosquitoes but after Hurricane Beryl and the recent rainstorms this week, the insects have been out in swarms.
KPRC 2′s Re’Chelle Turner spent the day at the Harris County Mosquito and Vector Control facility speaking to officials about the pesky insects.
She spoke to Dr. Max Vigilant who serves as the Director for the Mosquito and Vector Control.
Why are we seeing so many mosquitoes?
“Well, we’re seeing so many mosquitoes now after the floods, after the heavy rains,” he said.
Dr. Vigilant took Turner and KPRC2 Photojournalist Jeovany Luna on a tour around the facility. They learned how workers test mosquitoes for the West Nile Virus and other diseases. He provided tips for homeowners after a recent storm.
- Use insect repellent: Make sure you use an insect repellent that is EPA approved.
- Wear protective clothing: When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to cover exposed skin.
- Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Regularly empty or treat containers that collect water, such as birdbaths, flowerpots, and gutters.
