HOUSTON – President Joe Biden had a trip to Houston planned in response to Hurricane Beryl.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said that Biden was planning to visit Houston on Thursday.

“I don’t know if the press knows it, but, President Biden was going to be here Thursday to recognize our preparation,” Whitmire said on Sunday just hours after Biden announced he as dropping out of the 2024 Presidential Election.

Whitmire was addressing rumors about the city’s response to Hurricane Beryl, the Category 1 hurricane that knocked out power to millions across the Houston metro area two weeks ago.

During the initial response to the storm, Whitmire and other local leaders say they spoke on the phone with President Biden and the White House.

“I want to thank him, for calling during the storm,” Whitmire said. “Seeing what the White House could do to assist as we asked him for additional generators. So it was all hands on deck from the very beginning.”

Biden was diagnosed with COVID-19 this past Wednesday, his third bout with the illness.

It’s unclear if President Biden’s trip to Houston was canceled due to his health or because he dropped out of the presidential race.

KPRC 2 has reached out to the City of Houston to try and get clarification on the status of President Biden’s appearance.
