Her 29-year reign as a representative in Congress is one that will be hard to replace.

There are two steps when it comes to moving someone into the now vacant Texas 18th Congressional District seat.

The first is filling the seat before the November general election.

To do that, Governor Greg Abbott will need to call a Special Election. However, this can take some time.

The winner of the special election will only remain in office until the November general election.

Sheila Jackson Lee already won the primary earlier this year. Republican Lana Centonze won the Republican primary.

The Democratic Party in Harris County will convene and nominate a candidate to bill the nomination held be the late Congresswoman Lee.

Once they are nominated, they will square off against Centonze in the general election on November 5, 2024.
