HOUSTON – Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s office says President Biden will not be coming to Houston this week.

During a news conference Sunday, Whitmire said the president had planned to come to Houston on Thursday in response to Hurricane Beryl.

“I don’t know if the press knows it, but, President Biden was going to be here Thursday to recognize our preparation,” Whitmire said on Sunday just hours after Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 Presidential Election.

On Monday, the mayor’s office posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the president will not be coming to Houston.

“Given recent events, @HoustonTX understands but is disappointed @POTUS will not visit this week to assess Hurricane Beryl recovery. We are deeply grateful for the timely call from Mr. Biden after the storm, and his support is proving invaluable in addressing our long-term needs,” the post read.

Biden was diagnosed with COVID-19 last Wednesday, his third bout with the illness. On Sunday, he announced he was withdrawing from the 2024 Presidential Election.
