Cy-Fair Fire Department shares safety tips for grill masters

With grilling season in full swing, the Cy-Fair Fire Department wants to remind the community of essential safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Nicholas Buonarosa, District Chief 9-A with the Cy-Fair Fire Department, walks us through safety tips for beginners and grill masters. Watch his entire interview above.

Grill Setup

  • Always set up your grill in a well-ventilated area, at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
  • Never grill indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages to avoid dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Place your grill on a stable, level surface to prevent it from tipping over.

Pre-Lighting Safety Checks

  • For gas grills, inspect the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution. If bubbles form, turn off the gas immediately and do not use the grill until the leak is repaired.
  • For charcoal grills, ensure proper storage of charcoal in a cool, dry place. Use only charcoal starter fluid designed for grills, and never use gasoline or other flammable liquids.

Lighting the Grill

  • Always open the lid before lighting a gas grill to prevent gas buildup and potential flash fire.
  • Use a chimney starter for charcoal grills instead of lighter fluid to avoid flash fire.
  • Never add lighter fluid or any flammable liquid to an already lit fire, even if it is only smoldering.

During Cooking

  • Never leave a hot grill unattended.
  • Use long-handled utensils to avoid burns.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, avoiding loose sleeves or dangling fabrics that could catch fire.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires nearby. (Class B rated) Note: Water should never be used on a grease fire.

Post-Grilling

  • Allow the coals to cool completely for 48 hours before disposing of them in a metal container. Consider wetting the ashes prior to disposal.
  • Turn off the burners and propane tank on gas grills after each use. Turn off the grill by closing the propane tank valve first, then turning off the grill burners (to ensure all gas is released from the lines).
  • Regularly clean your grill to prevent grease buildup, which can cause flare-ups.

Additional Tips

  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area at all times.
  • Do not move a hot grill. Wait until it has cooled completely.
  • Be aware of wind conditions when grilling. Strong winds can carry sparks and embers, potentially starting a fire.
  • Never grill while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

By following these safety tips, you can enjoy a safe and delicious grilling season!
