‘Unacceptable:’ Investigation opened into company that runs Conroe Animal Shelter after puppy chews off injured leg

CONROE, TexasConroe Mayor Duke Coon says what happened to a three-month-old cattle dog puppy named Casey is inexcusable.

The dog, who arrived at the Conroe Animal Shelter on Sunday, July 7, with a severely mangled leg, was treated with what the shelter calls “over the counter” pain medications and was never given an E-collar to keep him from further aggravating the injury.

The puppy sat for three days in that condition and eventually chewed off his entire lower leg.

“There was no medical stuff given to this dog,” says Joy Southard, the SNAAR rescue volunteer who is now Casey’s medical foster. “He stayed in the shelter until Tuesday, and then a transport person came and got him and took him up to Navasota to get his leg removed, but by then he had chewed off the leg. I mean he’d probably just been in so much pain.”

Mayor Coon said while Hurricane Beryl arrived the day after the puppy got there, delaying veterinary care, he say’s there’s no excuse for more preventative measures not being taken the day before the storm.

“I feel terrible about this animal,” he said. “No animal should have to suffer this way.”

Mayor Coon has opened an investigation into the company they contract with to run the shelter, Care Corporation. The mayor says the company has already admitted to failures in the way shelter staff handled the injured animal.

“I have opened a full investigation into this matter. We contract out with Care Corporation and we expect to get to the bottom of this very soon. As soon as we get more information, we’ll update you. This is just unacceptable,” he said.

Casey is recovering from surgery and will be available for adoption soon through the group that rescued him.
