It happened just before 4 a.m. when investigators say the unidentified driver was with a passenger/customer on I-10 East Freeway toward the Kress exit. The driver stopped his vehicle to see what was wrong with his car after he suspected hitting something on the freeway’s shoulder.

Both the driver and the rider got out of the car to see what was wrong, initially, but then the passenger went back inside while the driver continued to inspect the vehicle. That’s when Sgt. Dallas with the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division says another driver, possibly in a pick-up truck, crashed into the back of the Uber driver’s car.

Sgt. Dallas noted the crash caused the car to end up on top of the unidentified driver, killing him.

In an emailed statement from Uber to KPRC 2 digital producer Ahmed Humble, a spokesperson said the rideshare company offered condolences to the driver and his family while simultaneously working to get in touch with the rider to check on their condition.

“We are heavy-hearted over the news of this devastating loss, and are keeping the driver’s loved ones in our thoughts,” the statement read. “We will assist law enforcement however we are able to.”

Meanwhile, no information was shared on the driver who hit the Uber driver and whether they would face any charges.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
