CYPRESS, Texas – A man is dead after he was shot to death Monday by a woman’s ex in Cypress, according to Harris County Pct. 5 deputies.

The shooting happened at an apartment on Cypress Plaza Pkwy. In an update from Harris Co. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the gunman, Kerry Cunningham, broke into the woman’s apartment after she moved there to “get away from her estranged husband.”

While she was inside her apartment with a friend, later identified by the sheriff as Clifton Lee Johnson, 38, her estranged husband: Cunningham arrived and tried breaking in by kicking in the door and using a screwdriver. He then found Johnson hiding and an argument ensued until Cunningham allegedly shot Johnson.

He was rushed to a hospital in serious condition, where Sheriff Gonzalez said Johnson later died from his injuries. Investigators say he was new to Houston and recently arrived from Florida.

Cunnigham, meanwhile, was arrested and booked in the Harris County Jail, where he is facing Capital Murder charges.

Deputies said the man was visiting the woman at the complex when her ex showed up at the location and shot him.
