The lineup for the rally consisted of former Georgia State Representative Stacey Abrams, Migos rapper and anti-gun violence activist Quavo, and Houston native Megan Thee Stallion.
Quavo took to the stage just moments before Harris came out. He used his speech to address the urgent issue of gun violence in America, nearly two years after the tragic murder of his nephew and fellow Migos member Takeoff in Houston.
Back in Nov. 2022, the city was shaken by the untimely and tragic death of Takeoff, who was fatally shot in downtown Houston.
The loss not only devastated fans of the Atlanta-born rapper but also left a huge void mark on the hip-hop community.
Since then, Quavo has been an outspoken advocate for addressing the epidemic of gun violence that plagues many urban communities.
At the rally, Quavo delivered a short but powerful speech that highlighted both his personal loss and the broader impact of gun violence.
“One of the issues that I care about is resolving the gun violence,” Quavo said. “You can’t understand the struggles of gun violence if you (are) not in the field or (at) the heart of it. So, one thing I learned about working with Vice President Harris is she always stands on business, from inviting me to the White House last year to discuss these solutions, to passing the biggest gun safety laws today. So, it’s only right in the birthplace of the culture, it’s also the same place where we launched the first African-American woman to run for president. Yeah, we changing the culture again. So, if you never voted before make sure that you get out and vote right now because this the real one. And in the words of my brother Takeoff, let me get a ‘Kamala!’”
Later on in the rally, Harris quoted a popular Migos song, Walk It Like I Talk It, in an attempt to slight former Pres. Donald Trump.
“(Trump) does not walk it like he talks it”, she said.
Last month, the Migos member hosted a summit against gun violence, alongside VP Harris, which was held on his late nephew’s 30th birthday.
Back in Houston, investigations continue into the death of Takeoff.
In April, a former forensic analyst from the Houston Forensic Science Center was in the hot seat after being accused of improperly handling evidence in nearly 400 cases. One of the key cases is the murder of Migos rapper Takeoff and his accused killer Patrick Clark.
