The hearing was held to address community concerns and gather testimonies related to the district.
“All of us, every single person here who represents Houston has gotten nonstop calls, emails, and text messages from parents throughout our district saying what the hell is going on. Why are all our favorite teachers leaving? Why did they fire the principal of the year? Why are the best staff all leaving?” said Rep. Gene Wu.
State leaders say they will take the public’s feedback they heard Tuesday and present it at the House Public Education Committee hearing in Austin next month.
The 2023-2024 school year was the first under Superintendent Mike Miles.
In June, the district released it’s STAAR test results for third through eighth graders.
According to the data, the entire district saw academic growth, but New Education Schools, or NES, posted even higher gains than the district average.
