When officers arrived they found a woman outside the house who said that 67-year-old William Ritchie had assaulted her and was still inside. The officers instructed Ritchie to come out with his hands up, but he responded by firing a revolver at them, forcing the officers to retreat. One of Ritchie’s shots hit a ballistic shield held by an officer.
As the officers regrouped in the street, they saw Ritchie at the front door, armed and ignoring commands to surrender. According to the Pasadena Police Department, one officer then fired a patrol rifle, hitting Ritchie in the abdomen. He was taken into custody and transported for medical treatment.
Ritchie later died on August 4 at 3:25 a.m. at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake. Ritchie faced charges for assaulting his spouse, and additional charges were pending at the time of his death.
