Howard had traveled back to the University of Alabama to pack up the rest of his things along with his parents last weekend.

His family says Howard was on I-85 near Salisbury, NC early Monday morning when he had a minor crash during a storm. His family says he got out of his car to check on the people in the other vehicle. When he made sure they were alright, he turned around and was hit by another passing vehicle.

Howard’s family says he suffered life-threatening injuries, including massive brain trauma and was on a ventilator prior to his passing. He died on August 1.

Howard’s family says they received an outpouring of support from both North Carolina Central University as well as the University of Alabama. The family says former Alabama head coach Nick Saban has also reached out to them.

Howard’s body is being transported back to Houston today, his family confirmed. They are having an independent autopsy performed.

His family has also organized a fundraiser that has raised more than $45,000 towards a $50,000 goal. You can find the GoFundMe here.
