Houston man’s journey from addiction to redemption: A story of second chances

HOUSTON – Jerry Hamilton’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of support. As a teenager, Hamilton struggled with drug addiction, which led to homelessness.

“Smoking crack, drinking every day at a young age, 17, 18, growing up, just going through life,” Hamilton recalled.

His addiction drove him to commit several crimes, including aggravated robbery, resulting in a 45-year prison sentence. After serving 27 years, he was released on parole in 2019.

Upon his release, Hamilton turned to The Beacon, a Houston non-profit dedicated to helping the homeless. The Beacon provides essential services such as housing, case management, and job referrals.

“I went to The Beacon almost every day, getting my clothes washed, eating, going to classes, and even singing at church,” Hamilton said. “They helped me so much; they were a blessing to me.”

With The Beacon’s assistance, Hamilton secured housing and a job at Truth BBQ.

The restaurant’s owners, Leonard and Abbie Byron-Botello, are passionate about providing opportunities for those in need. Hamilton was hired over a year ago as a busser, a role vital to the dining experience.

“I love talking to people, interacting with customers, and joking with my coworkers,” Hamilton shared. “The human interaction is what I cherish.”

Hamilton’s vibrant personality has endeared him to customers and co-workers.

“He’s a great connector for us,” Abbie Byron-Botello said. “We want this to be a true Texas experience, but I would argue that the real true Texas experience is with Mr. Jerry in the dining room.”

Now 57, Hamilton’s journey exemplifies the impact of second chances. Grateful for The Beacon’s support and his faith, he attributes his perseverance to trusting in Jesus.

Hamilton is also dedicated to giving back. He regularly visits The Beacon to share his story with others in similar situations, hoping to inspire them to turn their lives around.
