No description found

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas – Sarah Hartsfield, accused of killing her husband last January in Chambers County, now has a new attorney representing her in the murder case.

It’s the third lawyer to be handling her case since she was indicted by a grand jury last February.

Case Darwin, a lawyer from San Marcos, TX, will now be her lead counsel. He told KPRC 2′s Bryce Newberry by phone Monday he doesn’t expect the case to go to trial until later this year or early next.

Hartsfield’s last attorney, James Reeves, ran for and won the top prosecutor job in Lavaca County, and in a filing with the Chambers County court, wrote that he anticipates being appointed into office before his term begins which would interfere with his ability to represent Hartsfield.

The judge signed off on Reeves’ motion to withdraw at a hearing on Monday. Hartsfield did not appear in person.

The next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4 when we could learn if each side is ready to go to trial.

We are still waiting on a decision from the Court of Appeals related to Hartsfield’s $2 million bond, after Reeves filed an appeal calling it “clearly excessive,” resulting in Hartsfield being “effectively denied bail.”
