Houston ISD is starting up next week, leading to transportation concerns

School busses are parked at the Austin Independent School District bus center on July 10, 2020 in Sunset Valley. The Texas Electric School Bus Project, a nonprofit organization that advocates for electric school buses, estimates that somewhere between 13 and 20 electric school buses are on the road in Texas and approximately 170 additional buses have been ordered. HOUSTONHouston Independent School District officially kicks off the school year on August 12, but many parents are trying to figure out how to get their children to their classrooms.

On July 23, HISD announced they were making cuts to 85 bus routes to better accommodate students participating in the school choice program. These students attend a school they’re not zoned to, and HISD is one of the only districts in the region to transport them. They hope the bus route changes will reduce costs and ride times for these students.
