16 hospitalized after hazmat leak reported at Great Wolf Lodge during grand opening

WEBSTER – A hazmat situation unfolded at the Great Wolf Lodge resort in Webster Wednesday. The resort was holding its grand opening, three weeks ahead of schedule, when the leak was reported.

The City of Webster released a statement clarifying what caused the incident:

This morning, a third-party contractor at Great Wolf Lodge improperly mixed pool chemicals, causing a chemical reaction. This occurred in an isolated building separate from the hotel and waterpark.

Approximately five individuals evacuated the building. Sixteen employees and contractors working in the immediate area were transported to HCA Clear Lake Hospital and UTMB Hospital, with decontamination completed beforehand.

The Webster Fire Department isolated the tanks, monitored the area, and confirmed no chemicals were detected in the hotel or waterpark. Assistance was provided by Friendswood EMS, the League City Fire Department and EMS, and Nassau Bay Fire Department and EMS.

The situation was quickly contained and will not affect the Lodge’s operations today. An environmental company is working with Great Wolf Lodge and the contractor to clean the tanks safely.

Sky 2 was over the scene located near the corner of Fairway Drive and Rice Creek Lane Wednesday and spotted first responders hosing off stretchers being unloaded from ambulances.

We are working to learn more about the individuals who were taken to the hospital and will update you when that become available.

Great Wolf Lodge released the following statement:

The health and safety of our guests and pack members is always our priority, and we greatly appreciate the quick actions of first responders from the city of Webster in response to an incident at an external building outside of the main indoor water park and resort caused by an external vendor. We’ve received the all-clear to open the resort and all water park attractions as planned from the Webster Fire Department.
