Suspected shoplifter shot by off-duty officer at Texas City Bucee’s

A suspected shoplifting incident at a Texas City Bucee’s escalated into a shooting involving an off-duty officer late Friday night.

The incident took place around 10:50 p.m. at the Bucee’s on Holland Road.

According to Texas City Police Chief Landis Cravens, the off-duty officer tried to detain the suspect, but when the suspect resisted, the officer attempted to use a taser.

The suspect, who authorities identified as a 23-year-old male, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It remains unclear if the suspect was armed during the altercation.

The Texas Rangers and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office are now investigating the incident. The officer’s identity has not been made public.
