HOUSTON – Brett Detamore, the former West University home developer who allegedly faked his disappearance in June 2023, appeared in federal court Monday afternoon, pleading not guilty.
Detamore appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Bennett, not in custody, seemingly relaxed and laughing in conversation with a family member before his case was called.

His appearance has drastically changed since his alleged “faked” disappearance, including a shaved beard, shorter haircut, and leaner build.
He was granted a $50,000 unsecured bond, with specific release conditions including not obtaining any new lines of credit and no new debt as well as surrendering his passport. He is also not allowed to have any access to firearms, including at the family member’s house where he is currently staying.
Several of Detamore’s alleged victims who have filed civil lawsuits were present for the criminal hearing which lasted less than 20 minutes.
Detamore agreed to proceed with being charged with one count of wire fraud by criminal information as opposed to a grand jury indictment.
An initial trial date has been scheduled for September.
