Investigation underway after Harris County Jail inmate dies after suffering ‘medical emergency’

HOUSTON – An investigation is underway after the death of a Harris County inmate, according to Harris County Jail.

Inmate Hugo Mota, 41, was pronounced dead at the St. Joseph Hospital on Aug. 12.

Officials said he was booked into Harris County Jail on March 10, 2024, after he was arrested for continuous violence against family.

On Monday, Mota suffered from a medical emergency in his cellblock and was taken by medical personnel to the clinic while lifesaving measure were conducted, officials said.

The Houston Fire Department EMS took Mota to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

The Houston Police Department is investigating the death in accordance with state law that requires all jail deaths to be investigated by an outside law enforcement agency.

The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating to determine whether all applicable policies and procedures were followed, which is standard following the death of a person in jail.

Mota’s cause of death will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
