If you’re a Houston or Galveston native, then you know the water is constantly changing its color, oftentimes looking a bit brown.

According to an article on Visit Galveston, the water, which is actually clear, appears to be brown sometimes due to the reflection of landscape of “skyscape near the water’s horizon.

“Two of the main players that change water’s color from its clear state to a darker alternative are sediment and organic material. Organic materials, such as phytoplankton, often turn water various shades of green. Sediment often turns the water a darker color, ranging from murky black to coffee brown or lighter shades of brown or yellow,” the article read.

So, to see the best of the blue water in Galveston, you may want to go on a day when the wind is light.
