According to TMZ, a representative for the rapper said BeatKing was at a radio station in Houston on Thursday morning when he passed out.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died after suffering what they say was a pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when a blood clot gets lodged in an artery in the lungs, blocking blood flow. This can lead to damage in the lungs and other organs due to decreased oxygen levels in the blood.

PE often originates from deep vein thrombosis (DVT), where blood clots form in the deep veins of the legs or other parts of the body. When these clots break free, they can travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, causing a blockage.

Symptoms of pulmonary embolism can vary but often include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that may become worse when breathing deeply or coughing, a rapid heart rate, and sometimes a cough that produces bloody or blood-streaked sputum.

Risk factors for PE include prolonged immobility, certain medical conditions like heart disease or cancer, surgery, especially joint replacement, and a history of DVT or PE. Other factors such as smoking, obesity, and pregnancy can also increase the risk.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like a CT pulmonary angiography, which provides detailed images of the blood vessels in the lungs, or a D-dimer blood test that measures a substance released when a blood clot breaks up.

Treatment

Treatment usually includes anticoagulant medications, which help prevent new clots from forming and in severe cases, thrombolytic therapy to dissolve existing clots.

Preventative measures

Preventative measures are crucial, especially for individuals at higher risk, and can include regular physical activity, managing chronic health conditions, and following medical advice during long periods of immobility. Recognizing the signs and seeking prompt medical attention can significantly improve outcomes for those affected by pulmonary embolism.
