Houston ISD sup. Mike Miles says Marshall Middle School student who died suffered medical emergency during P.E. class

HOUSTON – Houston Independent School District superintendent Mike Miles provided an update on the death of a student at Marshall Middle School.

KPRC 2 learned on Thursday the student died after experiencing the medical emergency during P.E. class.

In an email sent to parents and guardians of students, the incident was witnessed by many middle school students and staff members who provided immediate assistance.

“Houston ISD experienced a tremendous loss. We’re devastated by the death of Landon Payton, a Marshall Middle School student. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family,” Miles said. “They are our utmost priority in this unimaginable time. We’ve been focused this week on gathering information for the family and have prioritize that above all else.”

The district provided a crisis response team to the Marshall Middle School community this week.

He said emotions are running high and the district will focus on providing further resources and counseling to help support the students and staff at Marshall Middle School.

Miles thanked the efforts of Marshall Middle School students, teachers, nurse, the city police officers, Houston EMS, and the Houston Fire Department for their efforts during the time of the incident.

He did not go into detail on the specific’s of the medical emergency the child suffered.

Miles did not take any questions from the media.

“The health and safety of our precious students is my top priority and the top priority of his these educators and staff. Again, I know you have more questions. This is the only information I can share at this time,” the superintendent said
