KATY, Texas – A massive traffic jam along Westheimer Parkway in Katy didn’t divert traffic but rather attracted it Saturday afternoon.
Thousands of Venezuelans, including those with ties to the United States for decades, took part in a global day of protest.
The people are upset over the recent election in Venezuela and at the administration of President Nicolas Maduro.
Maduro is viewed by many as a dictator and they believe he is refusing to acknowledge his July 28 loss to Edmundo Gonzalez.
A rally started around 4 p.m. behind the Latin Market in Katy and protests just like this one played out in many cities, both in the United States and in other nations.
Thousands showed up and the flow of protesters coming to join was non-stop.
Many Venezuelans who spoke to KPRC 2 Investigates’ Mario Diaz said the rally was about seeing Venezuela return to what it once was, a democracy.
They also said the reason so many Venezuelans are fleeing their country and coming to the United States is because there is no future in Venezuela under Maduro.
The sentiment is with a democratically-elected Gonzalez, the country could find itself on a path for change.
Other countries, including the United States, say that Maduro lost, but the president is not accepting defeat.
One man said “libertad for Venezuela,” or liberty for Venezuela. That is what they hope is the future for their country. Something they feel they, their countrymen and family back home have earned.
