The incident happened around 3 a.m. at 2300 San Jacinto Street. Police were patrolling in the area when they heard what they initially thought were gunshots. However, upon further investigation, they discovered a pedestrian who had been struck on the sidewalk.

Witnesses on the scene informed officers that the driver involved in the incident was fleeing northbound toward Downtown. The suspect was later detained in the 1200 block of Jefferson.

“An initial investigation, evidence from the scene, and witness statements determined a male suspect got into a physical altercation with a woman, 24, before attempting to intentionally strike her with his vehicle. She was not seriously injured. The suspect’s vehicle struck another woman and he fled on foot. He was taken into custody by responding HPD officers soon after the crash. The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released to police custody,” HPD said.

The 41-year-old woman who was hit and killed has been identified as Cindy Reyes. Authorities report that she was a manager at one of the nightclubs in the area and was on her way home when the incident occurred.
