SANTA FE, Texas – Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz sent a sharply worded letter to the US Department of Justice, calling for an investigation into the response to the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in 2018.
Cruz’s letter is the latest in a string of lawmaker rebukes over the DOJ’s initial response to a request for this investigation.

The DOJ originally responded to a request by retired Secret Service agent Mike Matranga, by erroneously mentioning Columbine and instructing him to call the FBI.
Cruz writes the DOJ’s initial response showed “an inexcusable lack of attention to the specifics of my constituent’s request,” and “disservices the victims’ families and the Santa Fe community.”
The DOJ has since apologized to Matranga and the Mayor of Santa Fe, and is reconsidering whether it will conduct a review similar to what it did in Uvalde and in Orlando with the Pulse Nightclub shooting.
