Houston ISD elementary school reopens after ‘HVAC system outage’ forces campus to close

HOUSTON – A Houston ISD elementary school was forced to close its doors Wednesday due to what the district called an “HVAC system outage.” The school has since reopened, but it’s one of several HISD campuses KPRC 2 has been covering that have had A/C-related issues.

On Tuesday, the HVAC system at T.H. Rogers Elementary School went out, and with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, parents were understandably raising concerns with the district’s communication, especially during the second week of school.

The district confirmed the campus would be reopened on Thursday. Other parents, however, have reached out to us about other HISD campuses having A/C issues.

KPRC 2′s Daji Aswad, for example, spoke with one parent and learned there was also no air at St. George’s Place Pre-School. Parents also had to pick their students up early at Heights High School due to the unbearable heat.

This latest development also comes as Houston has been under an excessive heat warning for days.

In fact, Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez says Tuesday and Wednesday were officially the hottest day of the year, hitting 102° beating Monday by 1 degree. The excessive heat warning has been extended through Wednesday at 10:00 PM.

Heat index values will go above 113°. Temperatures lower by a degree or two on Thursday, but it isn’t until Friday that heat indices lower to 100°-105°.

KPRC 2 has also reached out to the district to find out exactly how many schools are having A/C problems and which campuses they are, but have not heard back yet.

Our T.J. Parker will have more to add to this story and have a LIVE report later today.
