‘It should’ve been done a long time ago’: Viewers get help for tree debris piling up since Derecho

Tonight, we have a follow-up to a story we first brought you earlier this week involving a massive pile of tree debris that had been lingering outside of a Garden Oaks home for around seven weeks following Hurricane Beryl.

After that story aired, crews cleaned it up. However, we learned this problem was more widespread than we first thought.

A viewer told us her Northside neighborhood had debris still piled up not only from Beryl, but also the Derecho storm that happened back in May.

“It should’ve been done a long time ago,” Lauren Peña said, referring to a huge pile of storm debris not being picked up outside of her mother’s Bucan street home.

The Derecho storm ripped through Houston neighborhoods in mid-May.

“It’s very frustrating that I’m coming to visit my mom’s house that she owns. She owns this property, and we are not able to park at our house,” Peña added.

The Peñas aren’t the only ones in their neighborhood that sits between I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road dealing with this problem.

Just driving there, KPRC 2′s Deven Clarke saw dozens of other big debris piles.

Some good news is that after we called the city’s Solid Waste Department, we got some answers for the Peñas in an email, saying they “...Will ensure the resident’s home will be serviced tomorrow.”

As far as the rest of that area is concerned, they say crews are there and working. They also sent us this map of the area with green dots they say represent loads that have been collected.

They wanted KPRC 2 to pass along the message to residents, saying the crews “...Did not forget about them, they just haven’t quite gotten there yet.”

“Heavy trash pickup was supposed to be this past Monday, so if they could get this Monday, that’d be great,” Peña said.

We’ll keep you posted.
