Calls for tighter security at University of Houston following armed robbery inside dorm room

HOUSTON – Some students on the campus of University of Houston say they are looking over their shoulders now following an armed robbery at one of the dorms early this morning.

University officials say it happened in one of the Moody Towers. The victim wasn’t hurt but the suspects are still out there.

“For this to happen. I just think they should take more precaution because this could happen to anybody,” said freshman, Jordyn Johnson.

Johnson is one of several students calling for tighter campus security following the armed robbery.

“At first I thought it was fake cause I saw it on Instagram and everybody’s like ‘somebody got robbed, somebody got robbed’ I’m like ‘y’all are joking cause it’s only the second week of school so what do you mean you’re robbing people at gunpoint already?’” She said.

UH officials say around 4 a.m. Tuesday a student left his dorm room to use the bathroom and when he came back, he found two men inside rummaging through his property. We’re told one of the alleged thieves was armed with a black handgun and the other, a silver handgun. They allegedly held the student at gunpoint robbing him of his cell phone before getting away.

“It is kind of scary because I mean you never know who’s following you and watching you,” said freshman, Pace Hutton.

When KPRC 2 reporter Deven Clarke went to the campus, he found security cameras all throughout the area. Students say not only do you need to scan yourself into the Moody Towers dorm, but once inside there a several checkpoints you need to pass before getting to your floor. The issue, students say, is that the checkpoints are often left unsecured.

“Since it’s the first couple days of school, I guess the security is a little bit more relaxed at like every building really. So the security cards, you can really just enter in sometimes you can just follow behind someone,” said freshman, Kaleb Tesfamariam

It’s still unclear exactly how the suspects got inside, but if anyone knows where they are now, you’re asked to call police immediately.
