Suspect shoots, runs over 90-year-old with his own car during carjacking in Houston

“This is... This is just, it’s pathetic as it gets.”

A man was shot and killed during a carjacking in Houston on Saturday.

The 90-year-old veteran was confronted by a man who started arguing with the victim. Witnesses tell KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding they then heard a gunshot.

“I heard one gunshot and when I looked out the window, I had saw a whole bunch of police in the parking lot,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

The Houston Police Department received a 911 call around 12:48 p.m. at the Lone Star Living 55+ senior apartments in the Brays Oaks neighborhood, along Westbrae Parkway near Rainer Drive.

The vet was shot by the suspect and then ran over with his own car, according to police.

First responders performed CPD on the man, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“I heard arguing, men arguing. And next thing I know, I heard a gunshot. So, I ducked back into my garage,” said Rod Bosson, who lives next to the apartment complex. “He’s laying on the ground, a little shopping cart next to him like he was getting ready to go shopping.”

Police said the suspect dumped the stolen white car roughly ten minutes away inside an apartment complex on Dunlap Street.

Witnesses identify the victim as “Mr. Nelson.”

“Mr. Nelson...kind, friendly gentleman, always smiling everybody,” Bosson said. “You know, it’s a shame what happened.”

On Sunday, family and friends identified the man as Nelson Beckett.

The suspect has not been located, and police say they are, “armed and dangerous.” Police do not believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

“This is... This is just, it’s pathetic as it gets. That’s all I’ll say,” said Lt. Jonathan French with the Houston Police Department.
