Alief home used to help unhoused individuals catches fire, killing 1

HOUSTON – Firefighters in Alief say at least 1 person was found dead during a house fire call early Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 5:30 a.m. when the Houston Fire Department says it was called to Longbrook and Amblewood Dr. for a house on fire. Nearly 50 firefighters and about 7 trucks arrived at the scene and saw large flames coming from the front of the house.

Nearby neighbors tell KPRC 2′s Bill Spencer they saw the flames and leaped into action to try and put out the fire. One of the neighbors happened to be a former firefighter and tried to make contact with the occupants.

It’s unclear how the fire started but Spencer spoke with the homeowner, Miss Lynn. She and two other people got out safely, but a fourth individual, an unidentified man, died in the home.

The homeowner has been described as a good Samaritan who has been taking in unhoused people. One of those individuals was the one who tragically died, because of a previous injury that caused him to not walk very well.

We’re told he actually fell down a flight of stairs trying to escape the blaze, trapping him in the home. Two other men in the house after escaping grabbed a garden hose from a neighbor’s to try and extinguish the flames themselves, but to no avail.

At last check, the home is said to be a total loss due to the damage from the blaze.
