SPRING, Texas – A mother helped police stop a man running from them over the weekend in Spring.
April Aguirre was driving through the intersection of Rayford Rd. near I-45 in Spring on Sunday when, out of blue, a motorcycle slammed into the side of her car.
The driver of the motorcycle, 38-year-old Ole Thomas Mosnes of Houston, was speeding along the I-45 frontage road, according to an arrest report from the Oak Ridge Police Department.
When officers tried pulling Mosnes over, he took off.
A narrative in the report, obtained by KPRC 2, says Mosnes was “split between the vehicles and disregarded the red light.”
When he tried getting through the intersection of I-45 and Rayford Road, he slammed into the back end of Aguirre’s car.
“I was shocked, I started looking around,” she said. “I saw police sirens, and then I saw him trying to run and I said, ‘Oh no, no. You’re not going nowhere.’ He was ready to take off. I don’t know how far he would have gotten, but he was ready to take off.”
That’s when she got out of her car and wrestled Mosnes back to the ground. Aguirre’s daughter recording her mother keeping Mosnes down until an officer runs into frame and arrests him.
“I’m a whole 90 pounds. I can’t do much,” Aguirre said. “I could twist an arm or two, but I can’t really hold him down for that long.”
The mother just bought this car for her college-bound son. That day she was picking it up from the shop after pouring another $2,200 into the vehicle for brakes, tires and other work.
“It’s a big loss for us, because we’re not made out of money.”
Aguirre is willing to weather that financial burden if it means everyone walks away alive. Many of these high-speed pursuits can end in tragedy for innocent families.
“We’ve seen these accidents just end so horribly.”
While she doesn’t regret jumping in (and on the suspect) to help police, she wouldn’t recommend you try this at home.
“I think that it was kind of a dangerous decision, but it was just a spark of the moment.”
Mosnes was arrested after a quick trip to the hospital. He’s facing felony charges of fleeing and eluding police.
