Suspect in killing of Harris County Pct. 4 Corporal tracked to Galveston, taken into custody

GALVESTON, Texas – The Houston Police Department says the suspect in the killing of a Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable has been found in Galveston and is now in custody.

HPD says they were able to track the vehicle using surveillance video and were able to locate him in Galveston.

Authorities say the suspect was spotted at a hotel by a Galveston City Marshal. When he realized he was spotted, he took off in his vehicle.

The suspect and vehicle were in the area of the Causeway bridge when the suspect drove his vehicle into the water.

HPD says the suspect then got out of his vehicle and was in the water.

“Swam out about 50-60 yards and we had to use a boat and some tactical folks to grab him and a police K9 helped secure him while he was resisting the boat,” said Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz.

He sustained a bite from the police K9 while he was being taken into custody and was taken on a gurney to an awaiting ambulance where he was transported to UTMB John Sealy Hospital under guard.

Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz thanked all the assisting agencies, including the Galveston Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals.

Diaz said they aren’t ready to release the suspect’s name at this time.

“It’s a sad day,” Diaz said. “We’re just glad that we put an end to it now and hopefully can bring some closure to the family and seek appropriate justice for the suspect.”

Right now, Diaz said the suspect is charged with evading arrest, but he will not have a bond as officials go through the process to get him back to Harris County.

“Right now, he’s being held for the evading here in the county and I understand from the district attorney’s office that he will be no bonded pending the processing and the search warrants to get him back into Harris County,” Diaz said.

Diaz said dive teams are searching around the area where the car went into the water to see if a weapon that may have been used in the killing of the constable deputy was inside.
